The Great Gatsby Unit

Page history last edited by David Gower 15 years, 3 months ago

Here, I've developed a unit centered around F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby for use with classes that I plan to teach. Like many other teachers, I believe that this novel affords students a chance to grapple with many of the most fundamental aspects of modern literature including recurring themes, representative imagery, the importance of setting, class, sexual politics, unreliable narrators, modern decadence, and the struggle to sift through many character narratives to reach a concrete truth. Locate related pages in the sidebar to help you navigate through enduring understandings, lesson plans, and other information related to this unit. Or view the section labelled "Folders" underneath the sidebar to view all the pages in the folder titled "The Great Gatsby".

IMPORTANT: The first important page you need to familiarize yourself with is that which focuses on enduring understandings and essential questions that you will need to revisit as you read the novel. Visit that page here or in the folder titled "The Great Gatsby". Next, you will be returning regularly to the list of ongoing assignments in the Student Resources page. Please take a moment to visit this page, too. If you miss a day of class and want to know what we discussed, or if you're a teacher interested in potential lesson plans, consult the Teachers Resources page for assistance.

Now, take a few minutes to look at the artwork on the cover of The Great Gatsby below. What information, if any, can you infer might be found in this novel? Consider as many possibilities as you can think of with regard to possible themes, important images, title, color, design of artwork. Submit your response as a comment to this page.
